John has been flying for more than 30 years in RC and control line before that. He has been involved in the Pattern Community since the early eighties. His first aircraft was a Mach 1, designed by Norm Page, powered by a HP61, Kraft five channel single stick radio, one of the best at the time according to John.
John has also been designing aircraft for more than 40 years and been making his "Cyclone" brand of aircraft since 1996 of which he has made more than 60 aircraft. He now flies a Tempest which is an electric 2m model of his own design which has proven to be a great and competitive flier.
John lives in Yeppoon and makes regular trips to competitions across the country regularly attending NSW and Qld comps as well as the Masters on occasion.
Great supporter of fliers needing some support and advice.
James "Iceman" McAllen
James McAllen. Christened Iceman by Norm Brislin a few years back when landing over the cane at tweed heads.
My interest in model aircraft began at a young age when I lived across the road from the flying field of the Cork Model Aero Club in Ireland. I finally managed to get into the hobby after I had my 21st birthday party and everybody gave money instead of gifts. I started flying with a Precedent Hi boy and within 12 months I was an instructor at the cork club and flying competitively in the Irish pattern scene. I was flying a mike reeves design Thriller. This model served me faithfully for a long time and only came to its demise at the Gold coast club a few years back.
I had a 8 year hiatus from Flying as I started to wander around Europe and I only started flying again when I knew I was going to stay in Oz. I joined a wonderful club called PRAMS and it was through this club that I met Gavin Broadbent and heard about the QPFA. At my first opportunity I started flying in competition.
Some day I will practice before a comp but these events are more about the social meetings and less about the flying these days.
Great support from my lovely wife Mary and I am sent away on my boys weekends for every QPFA comp. (fantastic or what)
I currently fly a Cyclone, powered by a motor with a grey propeller. Many people are interested in what fuel and plugs I run and I can confirm that I do use fuel and plugs. Generally I try to keep the plugs in the motor but I have been known to let one get out when competing in Logan.
